Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

'Standing on the Shoulders of Giants' explored the great tradition that we stand within. The great dreamers of the past, the world we face in the present and the 'cathedrals'  of the future we are helping to build. It was presented in St. Augustine's Church in June 2009, New Forms at Greenbelt in August, and then again at Greenbelt in the youth yurt. Some of the links are not working yet... we'll get them fixed as content becomes available!

We were welcomed with an opening liturgy, written and read by Tim Lenton. You can read the text of it here.

The timeline running down the centre of the room invited us to enter those people, places and events of the past, present and potential future that mean most to us.

Participants were encouraged to produce a box, with 'now' on the outside, and 'future' on the inside.

Reflections were interrupted once more for a guided meditation. We have used several iterations of this for different events... all of them can be found here.

Finally, we closed the event with more liturgy from Tim. Follow the link to read it.

The screens that surrounded us were filled with images of individuals who became 'Giants' of the faith. These can be seen here.

The individual reflections in the room were interrupted for the story of 'The Man Who Planted Trees', abridged from the book by Jean Giono, with a video which can be seen here.

Participants were encouraged to write 'twitturgy' - devotionals of no more than 140 characters. These were uploaded to our Twitter page, and displayed on screens around the room using 'Visible Tweets'

Looking to the future, participants were encouraged to record a 'Youtube confessional'. We posed questions about the future of the Church, and responses to these questions can be found here.

The soundtrack to the event was inspired by the collision of new and old, and a full listing can be found here. To listen to the tracks on Spotify, follow this link!
